AASPA Position Statement on Masks in Public

According to the CDC, wearing a mask can help protect you and those around you from coronavirus transmission. The AASPA Board of Directors encourages everyone worldwide to wear a mask in public, especially when social distancing of 6-10 feet is not possible.  We congratulate organizations including maskupearth.org who are producing and distributing free masks to help blunt the COVID-19 pandemic.

Statement from AASPA

In light of recent events, the AASPA Board of Directors wants to acknowledge and affirm our commitment as an organization to respecting all individuals regardless of race. We denounce the disparate use of police brutality and violence against specific races. There are no words to express how incredibly saddened we are by the death of George Floyd as the most recent example of the pain and the hurt of racial injustice that is felt in our communities and around the world. We believe all individuals should be treated equally without disparity or discrimination, and we mourn with those who have personally experienced injustice. Racism is a public health issue that needs to be addressed.

As physician assistants, we have to be part of the solution by clearly stating what is needed to keep our patients and fellow citizens safe, supporting legislation that is aligned with our views, and inviting our medical and surgical physician colleagues to share their perspective on this issue and join in support.  AASPA aims to set a standard for our members to be united in our responsibility and to assure that our patients are kept out of harm’s way due to discrimination of any kind.

At this time, AASPA urges all of our members to take the time to reflect and find ways to have a positive impact in your community. AASPA’s committed to promoting inclusivity and diversity as a society and to work to ensure that our organization has representation that reflects our patients and membership.  We stand ready to work with our members, and with other medical and surgical organizations to develop and pass policies and legislation that can help protect our nation from racism and acts of violence associated with it.
